The Great Wall of China

The Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best-preserved and best-known Great Wall sections. Compared with the better-known Badaling section, the section at Mutianyu is less crowded and one of the best-preserved. It is located 65km (40 miles) north of Beijing city and easily reached by public transport.

The surrounding natural scenery can be breath-taking. Woods cover over ninety-six percent of the total scenic area, and flowers bloom all over the mountains in spring. Grasses swathe the hillside in summer. In autumn, the fruit trees are laden and by October, leaves turn red or yellow, touching the mountain tops with gold. In winter, the wall is covered by snow, making it more magnificent.
